As this New Moon is also a partial solar eclipse and will be followed by a total lunar eclipse in Aquarius in two weeks time, it is wise to be mindful of the implications eclipse season brings up. Eclipses are significant in their connection to the lunar nodes, which indicate aspects of both our collective and individual destinies. The houses and aspects the eclipses make in our personal chart are obviously tied to our singular destiny, while the collective is at play in the sign placements and planetary configurations occurring during the eclipses themselves. As such, it is important to be especially mindful of the way we exert our physical, mental and emotional energies during eclipse season, especially as the energetic quality of eclipses is rajasic, meaning highly stimulating and invigorating but also creating irritability and an overdose of energy. It is this same rajasic quality that is responsible for opening the mental channels and stimulating thought-realization when working with psychedelics- and likewise accounts for the frightening and overwhelming energies some experience alongside these insights. Staying mindful and calm during eclipse season will help to ease the effects these powerful influxes of energy have on our psyches and will assist us in non-attachment to that which plays out outside of our control. As retrograde Mars is sitting in conjunction with Ketu, the South Lunar Node, at the time of the New Moon, it is especially necessary for us to work in expressing any warrior impulse to activity on an inner level and aimed towards spiritual development and personal evolution, rather than becoming frustrated that our energetic output is not delivering tangible physical results in the outer world.

As always, we can turn to the Sabian symbols to give greater depth to the energies at play during this time.

The Sabian symbol for New Moon at 20 degrees Cancer is:

Venetian gondoliers giving a serenade

Rudhyar unpacks this symbol as being a festive nod to the happiness and sense of fulfillment that comes with social acceptance and integration through embracing customs and traditions. However, with an exact opposition to the New Moon made by Pluto at 20 degrees Capricorn, there are decidedly much deeper layers of power structure and invisible potency animating this delicate scene of human contentedness.

The Sabian symbol for 20 degrees Capricorn, where Pluto sits, is:

A hidden choir is singing during a religious service

Here we see a different kind of collective effort towards unity. In the scene of the gondoliers, floating along the canals of Venice, there is a socio-cultural implication to the sense of fulfillment being achieved by the participants. In contrast to this visible display that is steeped in predictable and familiar human tradition, the scene of the hidden choir animating a religious service with the appropriately hidden music of the spheres, we enter a more subtle sense of reverie and union through the fusion of material reality with its spiritual counterpart. The presence of this harmonic song indicates the human collective having transcended the separative ego in order to achieve communion with the Divine, aligning humanity to the highest possible manifestation of life on Earth. This in contrast to the singing gondoliers again implies a kind of spiritual fulfilment, rather than the fulfilment of the individual’s socio-cultural comforts of belonging.

These opposing symbols indicate an effort at remaining active in our collective participation of honouring what is hidden from view alongside celebrating what has served to bring pleasant fulfilment to the individual material life and livelihood. Implied is the need for a personal initiatory descent into the underworld that allows us to know the self without allowing what is familiar and predictable to define our identity. If your thoughts and true motivations were to define your identity how would it look? Are you vying for control because there is a lack of faith in the unseen universal design to bring you to your desires, and if so, is there a question of your desires as being entirely self-serving rather than in communion with the will of the Divine? Pluto reminds us that we are agents acting on behalf of what we love to bring its mandate into collective reality. Have we sufficiently shed our personal desires and motivations in order to fully embrace this truly empowered state of carrying the torch on behalf of the invisible forces of our Earth realm?

Leo and Leo Rising

This New Moon falls in your twelfth house of spirituality and isolation, Leo. You may need to take some time away from worldly obligations in order to reconnect with your inner divine nature. Perhaps you have been relying too much on organized efficient progress in the outside world to animate your idea of personal salvation. A mini health struggle or forced slow-down may be on the horizon in order to bring you back to reconnection and trust in divine timing.

Virgo and Virgo Rising

This New Moon falls in your eleventh house of community and long-term vision, Virgo. You may find a challenge presented around a community’s expectation of you in contrast to your own freedom to participate in shameless self-expression. Recognize that community is your own personal collective of like-minded individuals rather than a pre-existing social structure whose rules you must adhere to. Do serve others but don’t bow to their definition of how you should be expressing your gifts.

Libra and Libra Rising

This New Moon falls in your tenth house of career and life purpose, Libra. Bring your awareness to how you are pursuing your long-term career desires and bring focus to your efforts if it is not present already. Scorpio and Scorpio Rising

This New Moon falls in your ninth house of spiritual beliefs, Scorpio. Be mindful of those you consider great teachers and gurus and recognize that their teaching is only meant to be an enabler to get you deeper into your own process of seeking personal salvation through animating your reality with the whisper of archetypal divine presence and assistance. Open yourself up to expansive possibilities through recognizing the importance of uniting spiritual thought with day to day life.

Sagittarius and Sagittarius Rising

This New Moon falls in your eighth house of transformation and unconscious residual emotional patterns, Sagittarius. Direct your awareness to what behaviours and emotional reactions within you come from old, unresolved issues of feeling powerless or feeling a lack of potential and self-worth enface the outside world. If you are acting out of compulsion you are likely to make destructive decisions; however, if you are able to identify old wounds through their current triggers, there is great potential for transformation at this time.

Capricorn and Capricorn Rising

This New Moon falls in your seventh house of committed relationships, Capricorn. Draw your attention to the close relationships and partnerships in your life and recognize to what degree they honour the expression and development of your authentic self-expression. Know when to compromise in order to maintain the harmony of your relationships and focus on mending any relational dynamic that feels disjointed at this time.

Aquarius and Aquarius Rising

This New Moon falls in your sixth house of health and day-to-day work, Aquarius. Be mindful of the body and its needs at this time. Daily rituals that promise to perfect and preserve your physical, emotional and mental health require your attention. Honour that without the appropriate balance and harmony at these levels of being you cannot step fully into your spiritual development and enjoy the feeling of unity that you so crave. If your body is currently communicating a message, honour it!

Pisces and Pisces Rising

This New Moon falls in your fifth house of creativity and self-expression, Pisces. Reflect on your ability to freely radiate your influence into the outside world. Commit yourself to your long-term vision and see it as in alignment with the true expression of who you are. A sense of limitation in this area is a symptom of not taking enough responsibility for manifesting your desires. Believe in yourself and the gifts that you have to offer the collective.
